The Ford Mustang Stablemate Capri
The Ford Capri is making a comeback as the The Ford Mustang Stablemate Capri but it looks a lot different than the one people might remember. Once a sleek two-door coupe, the new Ford Capri returns as a mid-size electric crossover.
Yep, it’s an EV now. And instead of a sporty little car, it’s more like a practical SUV, built on the same platform as the new electric Ford Explorer.

History of the Ford Mustang Stablemate Capri
Ford first launched the Capri in 1968 in Europe. It was designed by Ford of Britain and quickly became a hit. They called it “Europe’s Mustang” because it had that sporty style, but at a more affordable price. The original Capri stayed in production until 1986.
Thanks to its success overseas, Ford brought the Capri to the U.S. in 1970. It came under the Lincoln-Mercury brand and was simply called “The Capri.” At that time, it cost about $2,300 — a pretty good deal back then. That version came from Cologne, Germany, where Ford built all the early Capris for the U.S. market. Ford kept selling it here until 1977.
In 1979, Ford gave the Capri a new look and officially added it to the Mercury lineup. This version became a kind of twin to the Ford Mustang. It stuck around until 1986, when Ford stopped making it. But that wasn’t the end. The Capri name came back again in 1991 as a small two-seat roadster. That version lasted until 1994.
The New EV Capri
Now, the Capri is back once again — and back in Germany, too. Just like the original, the new EV Capri is built in Cologne. But it’s very different from the classic coupe. This time around, it’s a modern electric crossover, riding on a Volkswagen platform. Ford worked with VW to make it, just like they did with the new Explorer EV.
Car Variants & Specifications
According to Car and Driver, the new Capri EV will come in two “Extended Range” models. The base model makes 282 horsepower and can go about 390 miles on a full charge. It also charges pretty fast — from 10% to 80% in just 28 minutes.
The premium model adds a second electric motor, which makes it all-wheel-drive. It also bumps the power up to 335 horsepower. This version has a little less range, at about 368 miles, but it charges even faster — from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
The Ford Mustang Stablemate Capri in The US
If you’re in the U.S. and hoping to get your hands on one, don’t hold your breath. Ford doesn’t plan to sell the new Capri here. For now, it’s only for the European market.
So, while the new Capri doesn’t look like the old one, it still carries some of that original spirit — stylish, forward-thinking, and built for drivers who want something different. It may not be the coupe we once knew, but it’s definitely a new chapter for the name.
