Shape
From above, the Yaris Cross is shaped like a diamond. Its wide middle and flared wheel arches give it a more rugged, off-road look.
Interior & Wheelbase
The dashboard looks very similar to the one in the Yaris hatchback. While the wheelbase (distance between the front and rear wheels) is the same as the Yaris.
Ground Clearance
The Yaris Cross has a higher ground clearance, making it feel more like an SUV.
Engines
Two types of engines are available: a regular petrol engine and a petrol hybrid. Both are 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder engines. Also, the hybrid version includes electric motors. One in the front and one in the back (for the all-wheel-drive version).
Electric Motor (Use)
The AWD system doesn’t use a traditional driveshaft. Instead, it powers the rear wheels with an electric motor, like during hard acceleration or slippery conditions. This setup helps the car handle tougher road conditions better.
Variants
The Yaris Cross is available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive and a CVT or eCVT gearbox, depending on the version.
Fuel Efficiency
It’s also pretty fuel-efficient. Based on European test standards, the AWD hybrid model releases about 135 grams of CO2 per kilometer, while the front-wheel-drive hybrid releases about 120 g/km.
Models of the Toyota Yaris Cross
XP210
Let’s focus on the XP210 model first. This Yaris Cross is built in Japan and France and is mostly sold in Japan, Europe, Australia, and Singapore. It’s placed between the smaller Aygo X or Raize and the larger C-HR in Toyota’s SUV lineup. This version replaced the older Ist or Urban Cruiser models.
Toyota first planned to show off the Yaris Cross at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. But the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, they released official pictures and details online in April 2020. Sales began in Japan in September 2020 and later in Europe and Australia.
Developement
The car was developed alongside the Yaris hatchback by a team led by Yasunori Suezawa. The design was a joint effort between Toyota’s teams in Europe and Japan. They took the basic look of the Yaris and added features seen in larger Toyota SUVs like the RAV4.
Summary/Conclusion/Practicality
In short, the Toyota Yaris Cross is a practical, compact SUV that mixes the best features of a small car and a crossover. It’s designed for people who want something easy to drive in the city but with the style and toughness of an SUV.
