How a tragedy became a meme – 9/11

On September 11, 2001, the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon shocked the world, leaving thousands dead and millions grieving.

At first, no one could imagine making jokes about such a tragic event. But how did 9/11 become a subject of internet memes and jokes? keep scrolling to find out.

1. Initial reaction to the tragedy

Back at the end of 2001 and early 2002, 9/11 jokes were impossible to come by. The whole world was subject to mourning and sadness, also including sympathy for the affected and families of the dead.

The situation was pretty clear. Make a joke about such a sensitive topic and get a taste of democracy. But over time, the scenario has changed. Nowadays, people joke about 9/11 online, especially on Instagram (also known as the racism platform) without any worry.

2. Time change, people change

People in the early 2000s had a greater sense of seriousness than people now. It is in the mindset of Gen Z and Gen Alpha to koke about everything, even topics of great sensitiveness.

Early memers and conspiracy theorists uploaded content less damaging, but as the trend arose, posts became dramatically more violent. This led to the arrest of many people.

Jokes and memes were usually on the delicate topics of the September 11 attacks, Osama Bin Laden and the US invasion of Afghanistan and the Middle East.

3. Influence of other historic events

Memes on other events like the World Wars or Titanic or any other event are also a reason for this. Every great historic event eventually becomes a topic for memes.

Many people do not understand and joke about these events as they have not passed through the pain and hardships the affected people had to go through.

It is often seen that memes erupt after someone disturbs a long-forgotten event. For instance, a lot of memes were made on the topic of Titanic after the release of Titanic in 1997.

Similarly, memes were made about the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl after the release of the TV series Chernobyl (2019).

4. Need more views!

When someone makes a meme or a joke on a tragedy and gets a good amount of views and likes. Others follow and create content of the same kind. This is a big reason for spreading a particular message on various social media platforms.

Influencers should avoid such content that a part of their audience finds cruel and harsh.

5. Perspective of the affected

The majority of people that do not find memes and jokes on 9/11 to be funny are related to the people who survived or witessed the horrors before their eyes. Such people truly understand the terrifying aspect of human nature.

6. Conclusion to this post

It is our responsibility as a responsible citizen to avoid revoking and hurting the feeling of other. However, if a group of people enjoy, it should be kept in mind that humour should be kept at a moderate level.no

Enough to make some laugh but not enough to make some cry!
