Several towns in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces were severely affected. The shallow depth of the earthquake, reported by GFZ as 10 km (6.2 miles), contributed to stronger ground shaking and greater destruction.

Afghanistan is a geologically active region located on several fault lines between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This makes it prone to frequent seismic activity. The country has a history of powerful earthquakes, and these events often cause significant damage to communities that are already dealing with long-term conflict and underdevelopment.
