Suzuki launched the eighth-generation Alto in Japan back in December 2014. It marked a major shift in design and engineering for the small city car.

One big change from the seventh generation was the switch to a torsion beam rear suspension in most models, replacing the older 3-link setup. All this helped Suzuki achieve an impressive fuel economy of up to 37 km/L using what they called “Suzuki Green Technology”.

Trim Levels and Engine Details

In Japan, the standard Alto came in five trims: F, L, S, X, and a commercial van called VP. All versions were powered by a 658cc naturally-aspirated three-cylinder engine (K06A). Suzuki updated the engine with a higher compression ratio and an EGR system (except on basic trims like F manual and VP), which helped improve fuel efficiency and low-speed performance.

There were different transmission options depending on the trim. You could get a 5-speed manual, a 5-speed Auto Gear Shift (AGS), or a CVT. And yes, all of them offered all-wheel drive as an option. The basic manual versions produced 49 PS and 58 Nm of torque, while the ones with VVT had 52 PS and 62 Nm.

Sporty Variants – Turbo RS and Works

In 2015, Suzuki added two sportier models: the Turbo RS and the Works. These had a turbocharged version of the same engine, now putting out 64 PS and up to 98 Nm of torque.

The Works model was more performance-focused, with extras like a 5-speed manual transmission, sport suspension, red calipers, and Recaro seats. Both had aggressive styling, HID headlights, and 15-inch Enkei alloy wheels. Despite being sporty, they still offered excellent fuel economy.

Interior and Features

The standard models had a basic black and white interior theme, but the sport versions went for a black and red combo. Over time, trims like L, S, and X got a dark blue upholstery upgrade.

Sadly, some features from the previous generation were removed, like adjustable rear headrests and foldable rear seats (in lower trims). Turbo RS and Works trims added leather steering wheels, paddle shifters (for AGS), and a tachometer.

Exterior Look

Most trims used halogen headlights and 13-inch steel wheels (except for VP). The X trim offered special two-tone paint. The Turbo RS and Works stood out with sport bumpers, side skirts, rear spoilers, and fog lights.

Safety

Suzuki boosted safety by adding electronic stability control and a collision avoidance system. The Alto scored 4 out of 5 stars in JNCAP crash tests, which is solid for a kei car.

Pakistani Market Version

The eighth-gen Alto made its way to Pakistan in April 2019. Pak Suzuki launched it in three trims: VX, VXR, and VXL. The VX was the base version with a manual transmission and got air conditioning in the 2025 facelift. VXR added safety and comfort features, while VXL included ABS brakes and an AGS gearbox.

Interestingly, Pakistan became the only country outside Japan to manufacture this generation locally. The Pakistani Alto uses the same K06A engine but with a lower compression ratio and no VVT, resulting in slightly lower output—39.5 PS and 56 Nm.
